NEWS SURF MUSIC ART PRODUCT DEALERS THIS IS RHYTHM SNOW Never focused too much on contests…I have always been trying to chase good waves. My motivation is my wife and traveling the world looking for perfect waves and creative people to share ideas with.
I owe it all to the dream life that surfing has given me. It has educated me in many ways and given me a world of knowledge. Surfing has showed me new cultures and most important it has given me friends around the world something that im very greatful for. Today I dedicate my life to surfing and building creative concepts that mirror the things I like to do in life. "Good things come to good people."
We are stoked to introduce you to Dane Kristopher Peterson A.K.A Peto, and welcome him as our most recent addition to the Rhythm Team Riders. Peto was born in Long Beach, California next to Snoop D O double G some thirty years ago, but since then this surfer and surf photographer kid has brought a lot to the table.
Scott Hulet of the Surfers Journal places Dane as the number one surfer of his generation in Malibu. He has scored wraps in over twenty of our favourite publications and his work has been used by loads of industry giants. Google his name and you will find endless amounts of praise and samples of his work. In case you can't tell we are pumped, and if you want to know more about this guy and his holistic approach to photography check out the short interview below and jump to www.danepetersonphotography.com to see his work.
Where did you grow up?
In way too many suburbs to remember, in and around the Los Angeles area.
Current location:
At my desktop on the Sunny Coast, except it's not very sunny today.
What sort of crafts do you ride?
Anything and everything I can get my hands on, but I generally prefer heavy pinched railed logs, Displacement hulls, mid length egg's, and anything Purcho (Rhythm co-founder, team-rider and designer Neil Purchase Jnr) and I conceptualize and put under our feet.
What would be your all-time favourite craft?
I don't think it's possible to have just one favourite, as there's way too many variations in design, as well as waves to express ourselves on. So it will always be constantly evolving.
How’d you get into photography?
I took a lil 35mm Ricoh point and shooter to Japan in 2001 to show my lady friend of the time what Japan had to offer. Came back chomping at the bit, frothing like a lil kid to see the processed imagery. Pretty much been hooked ever since and still get that same feeling when dropping rolls at the lab.
Do you have a favourite camera set-up?
As of late I've been fully obsessed with my Nikon F100 and 50mm F1.2, I'm getting a Mamyiya 645 pro TTL in a week or so and I'm actually a little worried that may take centre stage for a while.
What do you consider to be the best shot you’ve ever taken?
Fuck I dunno, it changes all the time, the feeling will last for a week then I'll learn something new and think it's crap and yearn to improve on it. At this rate, I may never take it.
Best place you traveled to?
Australia, I still haven't left.
Craziest thing that has ever happened to you?
Probably when I was about 17 some friends and I had just taken a bunch of Mushrooms, and were running around like mad men in a private estate in Malibu. We needed to move a couple cars and one of those little 50 Motorbikes. I'd never ridden a motorbike before got a 10 second crash course/demo, jumped on the thing, hit the throttle went straight into a wheelie which kept going more and more vertical till I flipped off the back of the fucking thing slamming my head on the concrete with no helmet, and snapping the ignition switch off the bike. It was pretty funny at the time seeing as I walked away unscathed, but i look back at it now and realize how fucking stupid and out of my mind I was.
What’s the deal with the nude self-portraits you attach with your invoices?
Well I kinda like getting naked, and I know you guys at Rhythm all love it.
It’s been said that you’re a bit of a hypochondriac, discuss.....
Ahahahahaah, well ummmm. I dunno. Maybe a lil bit ey'. I think I'm just a bit of sook when I'm ill.........I love to share with Jamahl (Rhythm Brand Manager) when i get the runz...... He loves all the gross little details, shit he may well be more twisted than me?? HAHAHAAHA
If you could do a trip with 5 people anywhere in the world, who would they be? Where would you go? And what would you get up to?
Only 5 people ughhhhh, tough question. Definitely Purcho as he's the epitome of fun and a eternal grommet through and through. Jim Newitt, and Mick Hughes as there two of my best mate ever, my younger brother Kristian (aka capt'n handsome pants), then Tom Curren and or Dane Reynolds, I don't know the latter two personally, but it would be fucking bulllllshit to watch them blow up on a trip with you and your buds. We'd have to a boatrip throughout the Mentawaiis and Telo's late season as your "almost gauranteed to get waves with light crowds", I've only been twice but that place is fucking ridiculous. We'd all just shred our brains out, get super crispy, document anything and everything, laugh our heads off, play music, sink piss, fish and pass gas. What all good men do of course.... Duh!
What’s your plans for the next 12 months?
Who knows, I'm starting an entirely new chapter in my life as we speak. So the world is my oyster.
Finally, what’s the motto you live your life by?
The best way to learn things in life is the hard way. And don't be afraid to share a smile, you might just make a friend.
